Becton, Dickinson and Co. (BD) has opened its previously announced North American Professional Service Center in San Antonio.

BD announced plans last August to establish a local office that would employ nearly 300 people.

The San Antonio office has been set up to provide various services on behalf of BD’s corporate office. The office houses the finance, procurement, human resources, supply chain and customer service departments. BD currently has 125 employees in San Antonio and will continue to hire new people. The office is expected to have an annual payroll of $12 million once fully staffed.

BD’s strategy is to create four of these professional services headquarters throughout the world. BD received $1.56 million from the Texas Enterprise Fund last summer to support its expansion.

Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based BD (NYSE: BDX) focuses on improving drug delivery; enhancing the quality and speed of diagnosing infectious diseases and cancers; and advancing the research, discovery and production of new drugs and vaccines. BD has some 29,000 employees in more than 50 countries.

The company counts health care institutions, life science researchers, clinical laboratories, the pharmaceutical industry and the general public as customers.
