Nationwide Insurance is set to begin construction on the company’s new 300,000 square foot sales and service operations center that, once completed, will house 800 employees.

The Columbus, Ohio-based insurer first announced plans for the new center two years ago. The office will allow the company to consolidate some office space and expand operations.

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff will join company officials in commemorating the start of construction on Tuesday, March 29. Company officials will be awarding $80,000 to local charities in San Antonio.

The new facility will be located in the master-planned Westover Hills community, near the intersection of Hyatt Resort Drive and State Highway 151 on the city’s far West Side. Plans are to have it completed in 2012. Nationwide already has about 1,000 employees in San Antonio. Nationwide sells auto, motorcycle, boat, homeowners and life insurance.
