United Services Automobile Association (USAA) was founded in 1922 when 25 Army officers met in San Antonio, Texas, and decided to insure each other's vehicles. Over the past 91 years, USAA has grown into a fully integrated financial services organization, providing insurance, banking, investment and retirement products and services to more than 10 million members of the U.S. military and their families.
USAA's mission is to facilitate the financial security of its members, associates, and their families through provision of a full range of highly competitive financial products and services; in so doing, USAA seeks to be the provider of choice for the military community.
Known for its legendary commitment to its members, USAA is consistently recognized for outstanding service, employee well-being and financial strength.
The San Antonio campus, which opened in the mid-1970s, serves as the headquarters for USAA's primary lines of business and is the home to more than 16,000 employees. The building, known as the McDermott Building, was completed in 2001.
Covering three-quarters of a mile, the building contains more than 3.9 million square feet. Another building called the Information Technology Center (ITC) attaches to the McDermott Building and serves as USAA's primary data center. Together, the ITC and the McDermott Building contain 4.2 million square feet, which is more than the Pentagon (3.7 million square feet). Amenities include five cafeterias, three company stores, a wellness clinic and three fitness centers.
USAA also has regional offices in Phoenix, AZ; Tampa, FL; Colorado Springs, CO; and Norfolk, VA. In addition, the company has two international offices, one in London, England and the other in Frankfurt, Germany. USAA began opening financial centers in 2009 to provide face to face service in military focused markets. Currently, USAA has 18 financial centers in 10 states and in the District of Columbia.
USAA is the largest private corporation in San Antonio and one of its leading corporate citizens.
