Family-Owned Businesses Continue Legacy, Growth in San Antonio

Two San Antonio-based companies will realize growth plans with support from the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation’s local Business Retention & Expansion (BRE) program. The BRE program team is made up of partners from private and public organizations who recognize the necessity of maintaining a strong regional business community, whether it be established corporate headquarters, regional operations, or small businesses.

The BRE team is designed to support local businesses. The team acts swiftly to make business connections, facilitate workforce support, facilities expansion, fast-track permitting, and in some cases public incentives.

Comet Signs, established in San Antonio, Texas in 1958, is a full-service custom sign manufacturer with national customer production capability and in-house installation crews located throughout the state of Texas. Over the years, the company has grown consistently from its headquarters in San Antonio, and through acquisitions expanding into other Texas markets including Houston, Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth and Tyler. The company required assistance to find a new headquarters facility in San Antonio to grow in support of its gas station industry business. The BRE team support Comet Signs in locating to a new, larger facility where they will be adding 80 new jobs.

For more than 120 years, Lone Star Bakery has called China Grove, Texas home. Founded by a German immigrant as a small retail bakery, the operation has grown to support commercial clients nationwide. The company needed to expand in support of new production, adding 170 employees in either San Antonio area or Atlanta, Georgia. The BRE team successfully worked to secure that job growth in San Antonio that will bring the company’s total workforce to over 700.

“The majority of our region’s job growth comes from the businesses already operating in our community. The BRE team exists to help companies with issues large and small in order to promote a favorable business environment that fosters company growth and prosperity in San Antonio,” said Tom Long, Chief Development Officer, San Antonio Economic Development Foundation.
