School Districts

The San Antonio and surrounding Bexar County area’s public school system is comprised of 17 independent school districts with a total of 453 schools. Like most states across the nation, there are ongoing efforts on the part of the state of Texas and the local districts to improve the quality of the public schools. Recent legislation has increased funds available to the districts as well as the accountability expected from the districts. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) sponsors an online database of accountability ratings for every school in the state. Ratings for San Antonio and area schools can be accessed at the TEA website: www.tea.state.tx.us

San Antonio has many well-established as well as newly-founded schools ready to serve the academic requirements of diverse student groups, including gifted students and those with special needs. Every school district in San Antonio is equipped with the tools and resources necessary to provide comprehensive instructional programs and services for students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, including college preparatory curriculum, magnet programs, specialized schools and a variety of extracurricular opportunities.
