The San Antonio and surrounding Bexar County area’s public school system is comprised of 17 independent school districts with a total of 453 schools. Like most states across the nation, there are ongoing efforts on the part of the state of Texas and the local districts to improve the quality of the public schools. Recent legislation has increased funds available to the districts as well as the accountability expected from the districts. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) sponsors an online database of accountability ratings for every school in the state. Ratings for San Antonio and area schools can be accessed at the TEA website: www.tea.state.tx.us San Antonio has many well-established as well as newly-founded schools ready to serve the academic requirements of diverse student groups, including gifted students and those with special needs. Every school district in San Antonio is equipped with the tools and resources necessary to provide comprehensive instructional programs and services for students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, including college preparatory curriculum, magnet programs, specialized schools and a variety of extracurricular opportunities. Magnet SchoolsInnovations in excellence are critical in meeting the future challenges facing San Antonio. Students interested in a particular field and who know what career path they want to follow can take advantage of the magnet programs offered by local school districts. San Antonio offers a number of public magnet schools and magnet programs that focus on unique fields of study. These programs are extremely successful because they target the student’s specific needs and tailor programs to relevant and timely research and academic developments. Other magnet programs include Business Careers High School, Communications Arts High School, the Film School of San Antonio at Harlandale High School, Fine Arts Magnet Academy at Jefferson High School, the School for Leadership and Public Service, McCollum High School among others. Charter SchoolsIn 1995, Texas established charter schools to give students more innovative learning opportunities and greater flexibility than traditional schools could offer. San Antonio has about 30 charter institutions teaching all grade levels, including the Academy of Careers & Technologies, Jubilee Academy, Irving Academy, Martin Luther King Academy and the Riverside Park Academy.
