Information TechnologyThe Information Technology (IT) industry plays a major role in San Antonio. The economic impact of IT and cyber business already measures in the billions: $10 billion in 2010, with conservative estimates of growth to $15 billion by 2015. The industry itself is both large and diverse, including IT and Internet-related firms that produce and sell information technology products. San Antonio is particularly strong in information security. In fact, San Antonio has come to be recognized as a national leader in this vital field, with the U.S. Air Force's Air Intelligence Agency, a large and growing National Security Agency presence, and the Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security at the University Of Texas at San Antonio. San Antonio boasts some of the most sophisticated uses of information technology in the world, even though much of that advanced usage remains undisclosed for security reasons. After all, the community is home to a large concentration of military and intelligence agencies charged with the missions of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Information Operations and Network defense, attack and exploitation. Prominent activities in cyber warfare, high tech development, acquisition and maintenance are found among the Air Intelligence Agency, Joint Information Operations Warfare Command, NSA / CSS Texas, 67th Network Warfare Wing, Air Force Information Operations Center, and Cryptology Systems Group. The IT products sector includes manufacturers of computer and electronic equipment and components, wholesale trade (including business-to-business electronic market), retail trade, and Internet and software publishing. According to a 2008 Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce report, the IT product sector employs approximately 5,240 people in San Antonio. The report also states that the IT services sector, which includes digital reproduction services, Internet service providers, computer services, computer training, and computer repair services, employs approximately 10,400 people in San Antonio. The Texas Emerging Technology Fund (ETF) is an important factor in ensuring that this sector of the economy continues to grow. With funding approved by the Texas legislature in 2005, the ETF was the first fund of its kind in the state, and has been effective in helping to attract and build new companies and to support research in this field.
