1. What is the basis for San Antonio's economy?

San Antonio's economy is very diverse, with significant input from the following various sectors: Biosciences, including health care delivery; regional and US/Mexican cross-border business services including banking, legal, accounting and others; financial and customer services operations; a large convention and visitor industry; four major military bases; and, a diverse manufacturing and maintenance sector that includes aerospace, technology, food processing and auto component manufacturing; and, our newest announcement of a Toyota Tundra pick-up truck assembly facility to be operational in 2006.

3. Are San Antonio's utilities keeping up with the growth of the area?

San Antonio's utilities: City Public Service (CPS), San Antonio Water System (SAWS) and Bexar Metropolitan Water System (Bexar Met) are continuing to invest in the infrastructure that will support the community's growth for the next 50 years and beyond. Those investments are being made in a manner that keeps them ahead of the demands of local population and business growth while being extremely cost effective.

4. What is San Antonio doing to prepare the local workforce for the demands of jobs in the future?

San Antonio has invested in itself in by supporting the development of the University of Texas at San Antonio, the fastest growing campus in the UT system and now boasts ten colleges and universities in the county enrolling over 75,000 students. Within a 45 mile radius, there are over 100,000 students, and within 180 miles, there are some 200,000 students at institutions of higher learning. The community has also established programs to encourage higher educational attainment and training.

5. What are the prime factors that led to Toyota's decision to locate in San Antonio?

Toyota's attraction to the Texas market was certainly key to their decision, but also important were San Antonio's abundance of sites (over 12 sites shown that generally fit the company's needs) that combined the benefits of a semi-rural setting in close proximity to a large metropolitan area and all its benefits, and an extraordinary partnership between the private sector and the local and state governments.
